St. Florian Scholarship Fund of Kansas City, MO
In 1996 a member of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department and proud member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local #42 had an idea to start a scholarship fund that would provide a small financial assistance to the children of KCMO Firefighters and IAFF Local 42. The man with this vision is Timothy Buster and he is the President of the St. Florian Scholarship Fund of Greater Kansas City, MO. August 15, 1996 the St. Florian Fund established a 501(c)(3) with the I.R.S. and started fundraising efforts. In 1998 the St. Florian Scholarship Fund awarded its first scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to the daughter of a Kansas City, MO Firefighter. From that point forward all of the awarded scholarships have been in the amount of $1000.00 each. In 1999 or thereabouts IAFF Local 42 began to merge smaller IAFF Locals and other fire departments that represented within the Kansas City Metropolitan area into Local 42. Today, the Greater Kansas City Fire Fighters Local #42 represents Firefighters, Paramedics, EMT's and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Jackson County, MO. Each year the St. Florian Scholarship Fund opens its enrollment timeline for applicants to submit their applications for consideration. The St. Florian Scholarship Fund Committee reviews each of the applications submitted and scores them based upon these criteria: community service, academic achievement, as well as need for financial assistance. In 2024, the St. Florian Scholarship Fund awarded seven (17) applicants a $1000.00 Scholarship. To date, St. Florian Scholarship Fund has awarded 158 scholarships since its creation in 1996.
